HOT SAUCE BOTTLE SIZES EXPLAINED: WOOZY, BOSTON ROUND AND RING-NECK

Sauce bottles are sold by capacity, but the box has to fit the shape. A 5oz woozy and a 4oz Boston round hold similar amounts and are nothing alike to pack. Here are the bottles hot sauce makers actually use, what the names mean, and the numbers that decide whether a box fits.

The three shapes

• Woozy. Tall and narrow with a long neck and sloped shoulders — the classic hot sauce bottle. Made in 3oz, 5oz, 8oz and 10oz; the 5oz is by far the most common.
• Boston round. Short and round-shouldered with a wide body. Sold from 1oz up to 32oz; hot sauce makers mostly use 2oz for minis, 4oz for small batches and 8oz for marinades and dressings.
• Ring-neck (sauce bottle). Tall, straight-sided, with a raised ring under the cap. The 12oz ring-neck is the standard wing and barbecue sauce bottle.

Neck finishes

The number on a cap or bottle spec like 24-414 or 28-400 is the neck finish: the first number is the outer diameter of the threads in millimetres, the second is the thread style. It decides which caps, droppers and shrink bands fit — and it matters for boxes because the cap height is part of the bottle's total height.

Heights are for a capped bottle; the "box" column is the largest bottle each pod family is cut for.

• 2oz Boston round — about 3.5" tall, 1.5" wide, 20-400 neck. 2oz pods take up to 4" × 1.5", capped or with a dropper.
• 3oz woozy / 100ml Dorica — about 5.5" tall, 1.6" wide (the Dorica is 1.65" × 5.53"). 3oz pods take up to 6" × 1.6".
• 4oz Boston round — about 4.4" tall, 1.9" wide, 22-400 neck. 4oz pods take up to 4.56" × 1.88".
• 5oz woozy — about 6.9" tall, 1.8" wide, 24-414 or 28-400 neck. 5oz pods take up to 7" × 1.81" (7.88" in the 1-pack).
• 8oz Boston round — about 5.4" tall, 2.4" wide, 28-400 neck. 8oz pods take up to 5.5" × 2.36".
• 12oz ring-neck — about 8" tall, 2.3" wide. 12oz pods take up to 8" × 2.3" (8.25" × 2.55" in the 1-pack).

Measuring your own bottle

Bottle suppliers publish height and diameter, but measure a filled, capped bottle yourself before ordering boxes: cap styles vary by a quarter inch or more, and a shrink band adds a little on top. Two numbers are all you need — total height with the cap on, and the widest diameter of the body. Put them into the bottle-fit finder and it lists every pod that takes them.

Choosing a size for a new sauce

If you are still choosing the bottle, weigh the packaging along with the glass. The 5oz woozy has the widest range of boxes, caps and labels and ships cheapest per bottle in a 3-pack. The 4oz Boston round holds nearly as much in a shorter, sturdier shape. The 2oz Boston round is the sample and advent bottle. The 12oz ring-neck is for wing and barbecue sauces sold by the bottle rather than the flight — and it is the one where the box matters most, because it is tall and top-heavy.
