HOW TO MAKE A HOT SAUCE ADVENT CALENDAR

Advent calendars sell out every November. Here is the whole build — bottles, box, filling, pricing and timing — for a 12- or 24-day hot sauce countdown.

An advent calendar is twelve or twenty-four tiny bottles and one box, and it is the best-selling thing many sauce brands make all year. The margin is good, the marketing writes itself, and customers buy them for other people. The work is in the planning, so start in late summer.

12 or 24?

24 bottles is the traditional countdown and the higher ticket — typically $80–$120 retail. It needs 24 distinct pours, which for most brands means collaborating with other makers or filling several days with the same sauce in different heats. 12 bottles is the "12 Days of Heat" set: easier to fill from one brand's line, a lower price, and a box that ships in a smaller carton. The 2oz advent calendar box comes in both counts.

The bottle

The 2oz Boston round with a standard 20-400 cap is the advent bottle: it holds a real tasting portion, it is cheap in volume, and its cap shows neatly through the lid cut-outs of the box. Avoid dropper caps here — they sit too tall for the lid. 1oz Boston rounds and spirit miniatures also fit the slots if you want a smaller pour or a mixed box.

Filling and sealing

  • Fill 24 or 12 bottles per set with a funnel or a small piston filler; a two-person line does about 150 bottles an hour.
  • Cap by hand plus a quarter turn, then shrink-band every bottle. Minis are handled more than full-size bottles and a weeping cap ruins a whole calendar.
  • Label with the day number and the sauce name. Sheet labels on a 2oz round are the fastest option; a numbered sticker on the cap works too.
  • Load the bottles into the box in day order, cap up, so the numbers read through the lid.

The box

The advent box is a white corrugated gift box with a die-cut insert that holds each bottle in its own slot and a lid with cut-outs so the caps show. Orders of up to 4 ship assembled and ready to fill, empty or with bottles; larger orders ship flat. The with bottles option includes the 2oz Boston rounds with black caps, in limited supply, if you do not already have a bottle source. Outer branding is a label or sleeve; custom printing is available on 500 or more.

Shipping a calendar

The filled box goes inside a standard shipping carton with a little fill above and below — the insert holds the bottles, the carton takes the drops. A 24-bottle box weighs about 5 lb filled and ships UPS or FedEx Ground; a 12-bottle box is under 3 lb and often goes USPS Priority. Seal every cap; a leak in a sealed gift box is the one complaint you cannot fix with a replacement.

Pricing and timing

Work backwards from the retail price: 24 pours of sauce at your cost, 24 bottles and caps, labels, the box and a carton, plus the shipping you plan to absorb. Most brands land at 2.5–3× packaging-plus-product cost. Open pre-orders in September, ship by mid-November so calendars arrive before December 1, and cap the run at what you can fill in two weekends. Sold-out calendars are good marketing; late ones are not.

Start with a sample of the box to test your bottles and caps in the slots before you order the run.
